The word Samgai means ‘Together’ in Nepalese. And that’s just what Samgai Journeys is all about. We are passionate about creating unique journeys that bring people together in mutually beneficial ways.
Created by travel writer, environmental journalist and award-winning photographer, Stuart Butler, Samgai Journeys is a small tour company specialising in tailor-made journeys across South Asia and the Himalaya and Africa.
At Samgai Journeys we think that travelling is less about ticking off a bucket list of sights and more about unique experiences and interacting with the people you meet along the way. This is why all our journeys offer a one-of-a-kind experience. From spending the night in a Bhutanese monastery to joining scientists during their work with chimpanzees. By tapping into our decades of travel experience, extensive on-the-ground knowledge and a long list of trusted local contacts, we are able to craft memorable travel experiences that bring benefits to you and our host communities. In short we want you to understand a destination and not just see it.
Putting community and environment first
A guiding principal of Samgai Journeys is that we want our journeys to bring a net positive impact to our host communities, the environment those people live in and the wildlife they live alongside. This is done in a variety of ways including tailoring our journeys to ensure minimal environmental and social impact. Wherever possible we use locally run small businesses and, ideally, ones managed as a community initiative, by the community and for the benefit of community and environment. We ensure you get a deep understanding of local cultures and wildlife – understanding what you’re experiencing ensures mutual respect. We avoid exploitive tourist sights and developments. And, most importantly, built into the cost of every tour run by Samgai Journeys is a small percentage (5%) that goes toward conservation and community development projects. These projects vary from reforestation (native trees only), to community conservation fees or supporting female education in Afghanistan.
