Journey to Another World

Travelling to Ethiopia is like taking a journey to another world. It’s a land heavy in magic and with a history as old as humanity. This is where the great, great-something grandmother of us all, Lucy, first walked the Earth. This is where the legendary Queen of Sheba tempted King Solomon. This is where the powerful Aksumite Empire rose and fell. This is where saints and angels built chapels on the summits of needle like pillars of rock or carved them deep down into the ground. This is where medieval Europeans believed Prestor John ruled supreme. This is where monkeys have bleeding hearts, deserts of gold turned to salt, magnificent castles played host to lavish banquets, and the Biblical Ark of the Covenant is supposedly stashed safely away inside a tiny chapel. Even the food - injera and wat - is unlike anything you’ve probably eaten before.

We first visited Ethiopia in 1993. Since then, we have made near annual return trips, authored multiple guidebooks to the country, travelled to all four corners of the land and watched Ethiopia transform itself from a barely functioning failed state to a cultural, economic and political powerhouse of Africa. Today though, after thirty years of stability and progress, Ethiopia finds itself at something of a crossroads in its history. Political uncertainty and ethnic power plays mean that some parts of the country are no longer completely safe to travel in. But Ethiopia is large and there is still much to explore in perfect safety. Our decades of experience and unparalleled local knowledge means that we can guide you safely through the wonders of Ethiopia.

We are in the process of building our Ethiopia journeys but for a tailormade tour please contact us.
