It’s the worlds second oldest Christian country and is home to one of the holiest Islamic cities. There are baking salt deserts in the east, frozen mountain ranges in the middle and, in the far west, vast swamplands that are a home to hundreds of thousands of animals. Ethiopia’s history goes back further into time than almost anywhere else and the country is littered in castles, historic shrines and mosques, startling cliff top chapels, and reminders of one of the greatest civilisations of the Ancient World. And all that’s before we even mention the wonderful rock hewn churches of Lalibela.
