Walking with the Maasai:

Loita Hills to Masai Mara Walking Safari

Are you ready for an experience and an adventure you’ll never forget? Imagine the thrill of walking for days through the heart of one of East Africa’s great wilderness areas, camping under a million stars, pacing quietly past herds of zebra and accepting impromptu invitations to stop and drink tea in Maasai manyattas. This extraordinary journey will take you through a huge variety of landscapes and habitats, which are home to a long list of birds and animals. Beginning in the cool, jungle-like forests of the little known Loita Hills (also known as the Forest of the Lost Child), where birds and animals more closely associated with Central Africa can be found, we descend downward through tiny patchwork fields of maize and wheat, past small Maasai villages and farmsteads where a traditional lifestyle still clings on. Loosing still more altitude, we drop down into the hotter, drier grasslands where herds of zebra and giraffe warily watch us. But this is not just a natural world walking safari. This is an undiluted cultural safari into one of the remotest corners of Kenya where a traditional Maasai culture still exists.

Our expert, local walking guides know the area inside out, but yet, no journey here is ever the same. There are no nicely manicured and signed trails, no set route and we have no idea what we might find around the corner. But, what never changes is the total immersion into traditional Maasai culture and the sheer thrill of walking alongside megafauna. For anyone who wants to combine the thrill of long-distance hiking with stunning landscapes, superb wildlife and an unforgettable human dimension, then our seven-day Walking with the Maasai hike is the kind of adventure that you will one day recount to your grandchildren.

This 7 day/6 night journey starts and ends in Nairobi and involves five and half days of hiking. As much as possible the difficulty of the hiking is tailored to the wishes and ability of the group.

Key Details

Accommodation on this journey is a mixture of simple homestays, bush camping and basic safari tents. The Maasai homestay has in-room electricty and proper beds, but exterior, common bathrooms (with hot water). The safari tents contain proper beds but no in-tent electricty. Solar lamps are provided for lighting. There is no in-tent bathroom, but there are several, large, clean, hot water shower blocks and toilets. Bushcamping is in small, two-man dome tents but we provide mattresses and bedding, solar lamps and a toilet tent and shower tent as well as a dining tent.

Accommodation

By and large, the landscapes are gently undulating rather than mountainous and the gentle climate is ideal for hiking. The walking is of moderate difficulty (we can also tailor this tour to make it easier or harder depending on your requirements). Most days you will walk for around 5-6 hours a day. Most nights are spent camping in small two-person dome tents either in the bush surrounded by the sounds of the wild or close to traditional Maasai farmsteads and villages. Most of the baggage will be carried by donkeys, but you will need to carry a small backpack with your day-to-day equipment in it.

We make this walking safari as comfortable as we can. We use proper bedding and mattresses in the tents and we bring camping chairs and tables with us as well as a toilet tent and a shower tent. When it comes to meals the dedicated cook accompanying us will whip up delicious meals (lunch is normally a picnic eaten in the shade of a tree, but breakfast and dinner are lavish cooked meals) and serve you snacks and drinks at the end of a long days hiking.

Please note that we do not accept children under the age of twelve on this walking safari.
